J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist, often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II project that developed the first nuclear weapons. There is extra interest in the man in 2023, due to a blockbuster biographical theatrical film release starring Cillian Murphy in the title role.
Born in 1904 in New York City, Oppenheimer showed early promise in science and eventually studied at Harvard and Cambridge. His work on the atomic bomb brought together some of the greatest scientific minds of the time at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
After the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer became a vocal advocate for international control of atomic energy and opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb. He passed away in 1967.
